Cooked split Red Gram with seasoning. This is a very auspicious dish among the Brahmin community and is prepared during festivals and all auspicious occasions. When the food is served according to an order, this dish is served on top of Rice, next Ghee is dropped on it and only after this will people start to eat. So, here is the Thovve – Dal Recipe.

Ingredients:
1 Cup Tuvar Dal / Red Gram Split
1tbsp Coriander Leaves
1 Green Chili, Chopped finely
1tbsp Fresh Grated Coconut
Juice of ½ Lemon
Salt to taste
For theSeasoning:
2tsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
1tsp Jeera (Cumin) Seeds
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
A pinch of Asafoetida
Few Curry Leaves
Method:
Cook the Dal/Gram in the cooker. Remove this to a thick-bottomed vessel. To this add Salt, Lemon Juice, Coconut, Chili and cook for 3 minutes.
In a seasoning pan heat Oil and add the Mustard Seeds and Jeera Seeds, when it splutters remove from flame and add Curry leaves, Turmeric Powder and Asafoetida. Pour this on the dal and mix well.
Serve Thovve with Rice and Ghee.
