Gejje Vastra is a string prepared using cotton. This is offered to Gods and Goddesses during festival pooja/ritual after the abhishekha (bathing the idols) as a representation of cloth.
Materials Required:
Cotton
Milk
Turmeric Powder
Kumkum/Vermilion colored powder
Method:
Remove the seeds from the cotton puff as shown below.
Using the palms of both the hands gently shape the cotton into a long thick pipe as shown below.
Now gently using your forefinger and thumb pull out a centimeter from it without actually cutting it. Now, the pulled thin portion can be twisted tight using the fingers as shown below. Repeat the same and the length can be as much as you like. The Gejje is ready.
Now cut a length of the cotton string and make two lines string as shown above.
Using milk, Turmeric powder or Kumkum decorate the string in between.
For the Vastra, make two small flat discs out of the cotton and soak in Turmeric or Kumkum milk. Squeeze out the excess moisture and press each one on either side of the Gejje.
Now, Gejje Vastra is ready to offer to Gods as shown below.

what is the significance and how many gejje is recommended for each vrutha ex ganapathi, vara mahalaxmi and navarathri
Hi Vittal,
After the abhishekha / bath of the idols, Gejjevastra is offered representing the clothes of God. The number of gejje is not as important as the number of lines. For Ganapathi it is 21 yele, Gowri it is 16 yele, Ananthapadmanabha it is 14 yele etc.,
For daily pooja you can offer a two line gejjevastra.
Shantha
Hi Naga Jyothi,

Hi, Very interesting web site. As and when we do Gejjevastra, grannies would recite 25 names of the lord for each bead.
I would very much like to know the names as it benefits us a lot while doing Gejjevastra.
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Malini Venkatesh
Hi Malini,
I am not aware of the recitation. Will get back if I get this information.

Shantha
Thanks a lot Shantha. This is the first time I am doing this. These steps are very helpful.
I am glad that this post helped you to make Gejjevastra, Priyashree.
Nice one , informative
Thanks Sharada.
hi.
if its not possible tooffer flowers aarthi and gejje vastra whats the alternative i am in atlanta and due to wooden houses people cannot offer these as well as fear of catching fire and rented places but i miss it so terribly its as though its a separation from soul .How to rectify these scarcity
Hi Seema,
In one of your recent comments, you have said you live in Mumbai and you are leaving comments with different names like “Sheel”, “Seema”. Your IP address says that you are from Georgia state, USA. Please use a single valid name while leaving comments.
Why can’t you offer flowers, gajjevastra and flowers to god in your house? I know many people in USA who live in houses not made of concrete who do all this and more. There are many Hindu temples in Atlanta, do visit them to find solace.
Regards,
Shantha
