One of the sacred beach in Rameswaram is known as Agni Theertham (fire pond). It is one of the 64 theertham that pilgrims take a dip before entering the Rameswaram temple.
A dip here is believed to get rid of one’s sins. Rituals for the departed are performed on this beach. This part of the beach is dirty and repulsive.
Legend says that Lord Rama prayed to the sea god to make way for him to go to Lanka to save Sita. The sea god made the sea waves calm and allowed Lord Rama to build a bridge to Lanka with help from Hanuman and his troop.
Beyond this portion of the beach, the other portion is serene with shallow water. The sea color is different shades of blue is a sight to behold.
