The first time I saw Lithops was in a gardening book that my dad bought. I am still amazed at these living stones. They belong to Aizoaceae (succulent plants) family. They are native of South Africa. The name Lithops is derived from Greek meaning stone face.
Lithops look like smooth pebbles or rocks. The plant is comprised of a pair of fused leaves opposite to each other. The leaves are greyish green, grey, brown, off-white, and patterned. They are thick and succulent. Yellow or white scented flowers bloom between the leaves. They bloom in the afternoon and close in the evening.
Propagation:
Lithops are easy to grow. They are propagated by seeds or dividing the heads. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil. Water the plants on alternate days.
