The other common name is Lily of the Nile. Botanical name is Agapanthus africanus and belongs to Amaryllidaceae family.
African Lily is a native of South Africa and is planted in cooler parts of the world to beautify gardens. Many hybrids and cultivars are created.
It is a perennial herb and grows from a rhizome. The leaves grow from the base of the plant. They are dark green, leathery, long, curved, and narrow. The length of the leaves are 10 to 60 cm and 1 to 2 cm in width.
A stout, erect, stalk bears an umbel of 20 to 30 flowers. The stalk is 25 to 60 cm tall. The flowers are blue to purple with white shades, funnel-shaped, and each flower is 2.5 to 5 cm in diameter.
June to August is the flowering season of African Lily.
Propagation:
Plant the rhizomes deep in the soil. Water and fertilize periodically.
