Called Iruvanthige in Kannada it is also known as Arabian Jasmine in English and Madan Mogra in Hindi. The botanical name is Jasminum sambac and belongs to Oleaceae (Jasmine) family.
Iruvanthige plant is perennial and the plant grows to a height of 5 feet or more with support. The slender branches are covered with dark green leaves. Flowers bloom at the tip of the branches. The beauty of this Jasmine lies in the long slender buds, a bit longer than the Gundu Mallige buds. When they open, they are a beauty to behold. They are white and the petals are double layered with a lovely fragrance.
A sought-after flower to offer to Gods in India, it is very rare to find them in the market. Iruvanthige is grown in temple gardens and home gardens.
Plant grows from cuttings. Plant them in well-manured soil, which should also drain the water well. Water daily and take care of pest attacks by spraying a good organic pesticide.
