Other common names of Coffee Senna tree are coffeeweed, styptic weed. In Hindi, it is known as Kasunda, Bari kasondi, in Kannada it is known as Kolthogache, Aane chogate, in Sanskrit, it is known as Kasamarda, Vimarda, Arimarda.
The botanical name is Senna occidentalis and belongs to Caesalpiniaceae (Gulmohar) family. Coffee Senna tree is native to tropical and subtropical America, but now found in all the tropical regions of the world.
The Coffee Senna tree or plant grows to a height of 2 to 2.5 meters tall. The leaves are green, compound, the leaflets has a sharp tip. Flowers are yellow and bloom on the leaf axils. The seed pods are 8 to 12 cm long and 6 to 10 mm wide. They are curved and the seed pods are dark brown. The seeds can be roasted and made into a coffee-like drink.
The parts of the plant are used to treat many ailments. This plant is toxic to animals.
