Bell Pepper

Common names of Capsicum are Sweet Pepper, Bell Pepper. In Hindi it is known as Shimla Mirch and in Kannada it is known as Donna Menasinakayi. The botanical name is Capsicum Annuum and belongs to Solanaceae (nightshade) family. It is native of Central America and was cultivated by native Americans.

Capsicum is an annual plant. The plant can grow up to 60 inches with dense branches. The flowers are white, single, and pollinate themselves.

The fruits vary in size and shape. They can be Green, Red, Orange, or Yellow. Inside the fruit near the stem is attached a globe of flesh with seeds.

The fruits are edible and is used almost in all cuisines. Soups, side dishes, salads, sauce, chutney, are prepared using Capsicum. It is added along with other vegetables and rice to enhance the taste.

Capsicum is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B6. It is used in Native American medicine and in modern medicine.

There are 25 species of Capsicum grown. The plants grow in sunny areas and well-drained soil.
