On 30th January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. This day every year is observed as Martyr’s day also known as Sarvodaya Diwas. In Sanskrit Sarvodaya means ‘universal uplift’ or ‘progress of all’.
On this day, people pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and countless other soldiers and citizens who have lost their lives for the welfare of the country.
Tomorrow (30th January) is the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The following poem was written by my grandfather Sri. M.M.Patil in 1947 on Mahatma Gandhiji in hale (old) Kannada. The poem style is Mathebha vikriditha.
ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾ ಗಾಂಧಿ
ಪದ್ಯದ ಶೈಲಿ: ಮತ್ತೆಭ ವಿಕ್ರಿಡಿತ ಹಳೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ
ಬರೆದವರು: ಮ್.ಮ್.ಪಾಟೀಲ್ ಕುರ್ತಕೋಟಿ, ೧೯೪೭
ಶಿವನೇಸತ್ಯವು ಸತ್ಯವೇ ಹರನು ತಾನೆಂದೆಂಬ ವೇದಾರ್ಥವಂ
ಬುವಿಯೊಳಾರಿದ ಹಿಂಸೆಯಾಮಹಿಮೆಯಂನಾಚರದಿಂ ತೋರಿದ
ಕರವಾಳ್ಕಾಪಿನ ಭಾರತಾಂಬೆಯ ಸಂಕಲೆಗಳಂ ಬಂಧಂಗಳನ್ನುರ್ಚಿದ
ಪುರುಷಂ ಮೋಹನದಾಸ ಕರಮಶಶಿ ಗಾಂಧಿ ನಾಮ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನು ।।

ಅರ್ಥ:
ಸತ್ಯವೇ ಶಿವನು ಎಂದು ಸಾರಿದ ವೇದದ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಸಾರಿದವನು, ಅಹಿಂಸೆಯ ಮಹಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ನಡತೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ತೋರಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟವನು. ಬಂಧನಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಭಾರತಮಾತೆಯ ಬೇಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಂದು ಕೊಟ್ಟಂತಹ ಪುರುಷನು ಮೋಹನದಾಸ ಕರಾಮಚಂದ ಗಾಂಧಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನು.

You are the one who spread the message ‘Truth is god’ phrase from the Vedas to the world
You are the one who showed the world about the importance of non-violence
You are the one who removed the confinement and handcuffs of Mother India
You are Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi who freed India!
