Goravas are followers of Lord Mailara / Shiva. Goravappas consider themselves the soldiers in service of Mailaralinga while he fought demons Mallasura and Manikasura. Goravappas are identified by their distinct nomadic lifestyle and attire , such as the generous smear of turmeric paste on the forehead, caps made of bearskin, kambal (black wool blanket sheets), black coat adorned with embroideries, cowries/shells and small sized bells, white dhoti, holding a Damaru and a pillangovi (shrill flute).
