Lalbagh is a Botanical Garden situated in South Bangalore, India. The garden was commissioned by the ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali in 1760. His son Tipu Sultan completed the 240 acre gardens. The Glass House on the lines of the London’s Crystal Palace and the Band Stand in front of it, stands testimony to the passion of the Sultans for the sprawling gardens.
Trees and plants from different countries were imported by Tipu Sultan. Many trees have been swaying and adding beauty to the gardens for more than 100 years.
A tower constructed by Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore stands on a massive rock formation. This rock is one of the oldest rock formations on earth, dating back to 3000 million years, which is a favorite among the crowd for climbing up and seeing the birds eye view of the garden.
Flower shows are conducted during Republic Day (January) and Independence Day (August), which showcases exotic flowers grown all over the world with fabulous display of structures and figurines created using flowers.
There are many lotus ponds, lawns, flower beds and fountains in the gardens. There are around 1,000 species of flora. Marigowda Rose park contains Roses in all hues and sizes. This garden is a favorite destination for joggers and walkers.
The entry ticket for adult is Rs. 10 and for children it is free. For the ease of tourists with babies and senior citizens the park has introduced battery operated open vehicle to take them on a 45 minutes tour around the garden. For an adult the ticket will cost Rs.100 and for Children below 12 years and senior citizens it is Rs.50. A well maintained nursery with a huge variety of plants are available for sale. Different types of manure and gardening tools are also available.
Gardening courses are conducted in the garden for the benefit of public.
