Chain Tree in Lakkidi, Wayanad was extremely intriguing and many types of trees trained to grow like chains came to my mind. Just before we left the resort for the sightseeing, the manager of the resort narrated a fascinating story behind the existence of this tree.
The Ficus tree is known as the chain tree as a thick steel chain hangs from the upper branches of the tree. The saga is that an adivasi / tribal youth called Karinthandan guided a British Engineer through the thick forests and tough mountainous terrain to discover the beautiful region of Wayanad.
The Englishman ensured that proper roads were built to reach this pristine land and to acclaim the glory of discovering the beautiful land, he killed the youth at the place where this famous Ficus tree exists. From that day onwards, the spirit of the youth haunted the region and was the cause for many accidents on the highway.
A priest managed to chain the spirit to the Ficus tree and travelers stop by to pay respect to the soul.
