Coonoor

Coonoor is situated at the head of the Hulikal ravine at 6,235 feet above sea level in Ooty district. Surrounded by tea plantations, grasslands, pine forests, shola, green meadows, tree factories, gardens, waterfalls, winding roads, charming houses makes Coonoor a popular holiday destination.


Coonoor is the second largest town after Ooty in the Nilgiri mountain range. Madras Regiment of the Indian Army headquarters is situated here and it is also home to many expensive catholic boarding schools.


Tea trade is the main occupation of this place and it is no surprise that the headquarters of South Indian Tea Board involved in research, commerce and auction of the Tea produced is situated here.


Wildflowers and a variety of avian life attract many watchers to this place. This beautiful place was the chosen one to shoot for David Lean’s 1984 movie “A Passage to India” based on E.M.Foster’s novel.


After your visit to all the touristy spots and if you are a trekking buff, you can walk from Tiger Hill Cemetery in Upper Coonoor to the tea estates. The dead in the cemetery are entertained by many rare birds, which have made the quiet place their home.


A ride on the Nilgiris mountain railway is a must to enjoy the hills. The train connects Coonoor with Mettupalyam and Ooty.
