Per our itinerary we headed off to the Devil’s Kitchen in Kodaikanal not knowing what to expect. After parking the car and a short hike uphill are caves and tranches that is mysterious and dangerous. The mist floating all over the place makes Devil’s Kitchen appear even more menacing. The caves are situated at an altitude of 2230 meters.
This place was discovered by B.S.Ward, an English officer in 1821.
Devil’s Kitchen spot has many caves, which are deep, dark, and narrow and infested with bats. Wild animals have made this their home.
You can just look at the caves from a distance as they are unreachable as the tourism department has put up meshes to prevent accidents.
The smaller crevices on the ground are also covered with steel mesh.
The parable says that the Pandavas used this place to cook their food here. I don’t think this could be the reason for calling this a Devil’s kitchen as the Pandavas were no devils but in fact the opposite as they tread the path of righteousness.
A great place to spend time and take pictures and recollect the scenes from the Tamil movie Guna, which was picturized here. That is another reason why this place is also known as Guna caves.
Trees growing here also add to the eeriness of this place, the roots are spread on the hills and has formed a huge pattern on the terrain.
