“Dodda” means big and “Betta” means hill in Kannada language spoken by the Badaga tribe of Ooty. Doddabetta is situated 10 Km from Ooty at 2,623 meters above sea level and it is the highest peak in Nilgiri district.
The drive or walk to the peak itself is invigorating, which no spa can match. The cool breeze mixed with the heady scent of Nilgiri / Eucalyptus tree can give you a much needed natural healing from the din of the traffic and city lights.
Every bend in the roads give you spectacular views of the reserved forests, sholas and the plains.
There is continuous range of hills all around and the Western and Eastern Ghats meet at this place.
A telescope house is maintained by TTDC at the top through which some of the landmarks of the region can be seen on a clear day.
Wild flowers like everlasting flowers, dandelions, wild roses, passiflora / passion flower, and rhododendrons grow on the hills. Delicate ferns cover the ground. Many orchids cling to trees and other ground orchids flourish in-between the thick carpet of rotting leaves.
You can hear bird songs as you drive up the hill.
