A lake in the middle of the desert is a surprise to the visitors and the presence of an exquisitely carved sandstone balcony in the lake adds to the mystical charm. Gadisar Lake is a man-made lake also known as Gadsisar / Gadsi / Garisisar lake.
The main source of this lake was rain water and is believed to have been present from the 2nd century. This natural catchment area was the only source of water to Jaisalmer city. Recognizing the importance of this lake, Maharawal Gadsi Singh built and protected the lake in 1367. In 1400 Maharaja Garisisar Singh rebuilt and restored the lake.
Chattris / royal cenotaphs and temples surround the banks of the lake. Gadisar Lake is situated to the south of Jaisalmer city. An intricately sandstone carved archway to the lake was built by the court dancer Tilon and hence it is known as Tilon-Ki-Pol. She has installed an image of Lord Satyanarayana on the gate. The lake is buzzes with activity during Gangaur festival celebrations.
The majestic Jaisalmer Fort is visible from the lake.
Though the lake is now not the source for the water requirements of Jaisalmer, it is well protected and attracts many tourists. Many migratory water birds flock to this lake. Visitors can also enjoy boat rides on this ancient lake.
The best time to visit is from October to March.
