Gomatagiri is situated in Bettadoor in Mysore district.
Gomatagiri is a major Jain center. In the 11th Century, a 10-meter-tall granite statue of Gometeshwara also known as Bahubali is installed on a small hill. The statue is in Vijayanagara style of sculpture. The hill is 50-meter-high, and a flight of stone steps lead to the shrine. It is very easy to climb up and it is very calming to see the serene face of the Lord with curly hair.
The idol symbolizes peace, nonviolence, renouncement of materialistic things, and simple living. Bahubali embraced the standing posture to meditate.
He was so motionless during this time that vines grew around his leg and an anthill came up behind him. With a faint smile, he seems to be present only to give blessings with absolute detachment.
After praying to the Lord, you can take in the panoramic views.
The surrounding is green and beautiful. The hill is covered with Eucalyptus trees.
Further in the horizon, you can see the Krishna Sagar Dam backwaters.
Next to the hill are small shrines that gives a very neat and divine feel. During the annual Mahamastakabhisheka (Grand Consecration/ festival), thousands of devotees congregate in Gomatagiri.
We spotted many Grey Hornbills perched on trees feasting on the fruits.
