The Kabini or Kapila River, also called Kabani and Kapila, flows in southern India. It originates from Pakramthalam hills in Wayanad District of Kerala.
Makkiyad River and Periya River join Kabini near Korome and Valad respectively. The river continues its journey through Mananthavady town and Panamaram River originating from Banasura Sagar reservoir joins Kabini near Payyampally. As it flows with new vigor, Kuruva islands spread over 520 acres are formed, which are rich in flora and fauna.

River Kalindi originating from Brahmagiri hills meets river Papanasini near Tirunelly temple and the confluence is merged with River Kabini. Taraka and Nugu rivulets join Kabini River in Heggdadevanan Kote Taluk (H.D.Kote). 20 Kms from Kuruva Islands, the river reaches the Kabini reservoir near Sargur town bordering Kerala and Karnataka.

Kabini flows eastward to join the Kaveri River at Tirumakudalu Narasipura in Karnataka. Eventually, Kaveri River joins the Bay of Bengal Sea at Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu.

The backwaters of the Kabini reservoir are rich in wildlife especially in summer when the water level recedes to form rich grassy meadows.
