The Linganamakki dam is located in Kargal town, Sagara taluk and is built across Sharavathi River in 1964. The length of the dam is 2.4 km and height is 193 feet. The dam is situated at a height of 1819 feet above sea level. Linganamakki reservoir is spread over an area of 128.7 kms.
Total capacity of the reservoir is 152 thousand million cubic feet. The catchment area is 1,991.71 square kilometers. The Linganamakki Dam Powerhouse has 2 generating units and generates a capacity of 55 MW.
The dam was designed to store 4368 million cubic meter of water in an area of around 300 square km, submerging many kilometers of wetland, dry land, forest land, and wasteland.
Linganamakki reservoir receives water from incessant rainfall and from Chakra and Savahaklu reservoirs, which are linked to Linganamakki through a canal. When the dam’s sluice gates are closed, the water at Jog falls is just a trickle.
But when the gates open, the falls looks gorgeous.
As the Linganamakki Dam is huge, it is visible from a great distance. The view from the dam is breathtaking.
The dam was designed to impound 4368 million cubic meter of water in an area of around 300 km, submerging 50.62 km of wetland and 7 km of dry land, with the remaining being forest land and wasteland.
July to September is the best time to visit Linganamakki dam.
