Manikyadhara falls also known as Nellikayi Theertha is situated 1 km from Baba Budan Giri Dattatreya Peetha, Chikkamagalur, Karnataka. The water that falls down is in the form of droplets and they shine in the sunlight. Hence, it is known as Manikyadhara means a string of Pearls.
It is nestled in the beautiful Hills of Basavangudda and Waddin Gudda Ranges and the Shola forest at a height of 6000 feet above sea level. After parking the car, you will have climb down around 200 steps to see the falls. The water remains extremely cold in all seasons.
Both Hindus and Muslims believe that they are relieved of ailments if they bathe under this falls. It is a pilgrimage center for Muslims. It is believed that when saint Hazrat Dada Hayath Mir Khalandar and his 4 disciples came to India and traveled to this part of the country, there was o water in sight. They prayed to god and water flowed naturally in the form of the waterfalls.
It is also believed that the person who takes a bath here has to leave one piece of garment for the his wishes to be fulfilled.
There is an area for the pilgrims to offer prayers. It is believed by Muslims in this region, that if a marriageable age girl is not getting good alliances, then bangles are brought here and offered to the saint. These bangles when worn by the girl will change her destiny and bring her good luck and a good alliance.
A cave has been carved out and the mud there is collected by the Muslim devotees. I asked them why they are taking the mud and they answered that it cures many ailments and it brings them luck.
It was a wonderful experience visiting this place and talking to the chief priest / mullah about the importance of this place.
