Muthanga wildlife sanctuary was established in 1973 and adjoined to the protected forest network in the Nilgiri Biosphere comprising of Nagarhole, Bandipur, and Madumalai.
Rich in bio-diversity, the area is conserved keeping in mind the tribal who are dependent on the forest. It is spread over an area of 345 square Km.
Elephant population is very high in this forest and Muthanga wildlife sanctuary has been declared as a project Elephant region.
Apart from Elephants, tigers are sighted. Spotted Deer graze in the forests along with Langur, Sambar, Monkeys, Mongoose, Leopards, Jungle cats, Wild dogs, Civet cats, and Jackals.
Wide variety of birds, butterflies, and insects also have made this beautiful forest their home.
The forest is semi-deciduous and is a pleasure to drive through it, sighting wildlife and birds. Rosewood, teak and other trees can be spotted here.
There are Jeep Safaris to take visitors into the forest. Best time to visit is from August to February.
