Situated 42 Kms from Jaisalmer is the Sam Sand Dunes and the Kuari dunes on the great Thar Desert of Rajasthan. We chose to visit Sam dunes, pronounced as “Sum”, and the sights of the desert just took our breath away. We wanted to freeze the experience and savor in every moment spent on the sandy dunes.
The Camel owners lure the eager tourists to go on a long Camel safari in to the Desert National part with promises of spotting the Chinkara, Nilgai, and the almost extinct Great Indian Bustard.
Though you may spot only the Chinkara, the Camel safari is a perfect way to enjoy the sand dunes of the desert.
As the sun sets in the horizon, the whole desert turns a golden yellow. It is magical to see the whole landscape change and the Camels are lead away by the owners for a good night’s sleep.
The few months in winter is the season for the natives here to earn some money. Life is harsh here with extreme climates, but the people are happy.
Many Desert camps are set up in the desert to host tourists. Cozy tents are pitches in each of the camps with a double bed, chairs for seating, dressing mirror, a shower with hot water facility and toilet.
As darkness descends, Rajasthan folk musicians and dancers entertain the guests around a bonfire. Guests wrapped in warm clothes keep the beat with the tunes. A sumptuous dinner in the dining hall tent wraps up the desert experience.
Best time to visit is from November to February.
During January-February, the Desert festival is held in Sam Sand Dunes during which the desert resonates with music and dance. Turban tying contents, camel races, and games showcase the sporting talent. Various artisans of Rajasthan display their crafts in the craft bazaar for the tourist to pick souvenirs. The highlight during the festival is the light and sound show on the Sam Sand Dunes.
