Churches built by the Portuguese dot the Goan landscape and St. Lawrence Church is one of them. Located on a hill and built in Portuguese style of architecture, this white church was built in 1565 for the poor and the cooks.
The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence the martyr. The building has a single tile roofed nave and vaulted chapel. The high choir is borne by Tuscan columns made of stone from North Goa. The north tower is set back slightly from the main façade. There are three-arched exterior galilees, which add to the charm. A chapel dating back to 18th century is situated on the southern side.
On August 10th each year, the villagers of Agassaim congregate her to celebrate Saint Lawrence. A unique coconut breaking contest is also held during this time.
