Gananaptivattam was a small town in Wayanad district ruled by the Rajas of the Veda tribe and Pazhassi Raja of Kottayam-Kurumbanad Royal Dynasty of Kannur. Hyder Ali captured Wayanad and his son Tipu Sultan controlled the territory.
Tipu Sultan destroyed the ancient Jain temple and stored ammunition inside the temple. The name of the town was changed to Sultan Battery. Sultan stands for Tipu Sultan and Battery means fort.
Situated at 930 meters above sea level, the town is surrounded by rolling hills. A pleasant climate throughout the year attracts many tourists.
Many tribal groups exist in this region with agriculture as the main occupation.
