Akkithari Uppittu is a dish prepared using broken Rice. This dish when prepared using boiled Flat Beans or Winter Beans (Avarekalu) is extremely tasty and very popular in South Karnataka. Akkithari Uppittu is served as breakfast along with filter coffee.

Ingredients:
4 Cups Akkithari/Broken Rice
4 – 5 Green Chilies, Chopped finely
½ Cup Avarekayi/Flat beans, Boiled (Optional)
10 Curry leaves, Chopped
Juice of 1 Lemon
2tbsp Oil
1tsp Bengal Gram Dal / Split Chikpeas
1tsp Urad Dal/Black Gram split
1tsp Mustard Seeds
½ Cup fresh Coconut, Grated
Few sprigs of Coriander leaves, Chopped finely
Salt to taste
Method:
Roast Akkithari for 2 minutes, remove and keep it aside.
Keep a vessel with 9 Cups of water to boil.
Heat Oil in a kadai/pan and add Bengal Gram Dal, Urad Dal and when they turn pink, add Mustard Seeds. When the Mustard seeds splutter add Curry leaves and Green Chilies.
To this add Akkithari/Broken Rice and mix well.
Add boiled Avarekalu.
Mix well.
Add Salt and Lemon juice and boiling water and close the kadai with a lid.
After 2 minutes, remove the lid and add Coconut and Coriander leaves and mix well.
Remove to a serving bowl.
Serve hot Akkithari Uppittu with a piping cup of filter coffee.
After breakfast, tie the remaining Uppittu / Upma into round balls and keep aside. These can be steamed or microwaved when necessary and served.
