Menthedittu is a flavored powder prepared using a mixture of roasted lentils. A spoon of this powder is mixed with hot rice and ghee and eaten as a starter and the aroma and taste is mouthwatering. This is very popular in North Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Time Required: 30 Minutes
Ingredients:
4 Cups Kadalebele / Channa dal / Bengal Gram
1 Cup Uddinabele / Urad Dal / Black Gram Split
1 Cups Hesarubele / Moong dal / Split Green Gram
8 tbsp Akki / Raw Rice
2 inches Arishanada Beru / Turmeric Root
1 Cup Jeerige / Jeera / Cumin Seeds
4 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Ingu / Hing / Asafoetida
1 tsp Menthya / Methi / Fenugreek Seeds (Optional)
Method:
Dry-roast Bengal Gram or Green Gram along with Turmeric root.
Dry-roast the other ingredients separately.
Remove the roasted ingredients on a cloth towel and let it cool. Fry Hing in 1/4 tsp Ghee. Break the Turmeric root into small pieces. Grind everything together to a fine powder.
Sieve and store this powder in airtight dry containers. This can be stored for more than 6 months.
Serve a spoon of this powder with hot Rice, Ghee (Clarified Butter), Salt and Pickle. Mix everything together and relish it when hot.
This Powder can be used to prepare chutneys, sauce and used as the main ingredient in preparing a dish using avalakki (flattened rice).
