Gruel prepared with rice and curds. Ambali is prepared on Shravana Shanivara Vratha / religious observance.

Ingredients:
1 Cup Rice
2 Green Chilies
2tbsp Coconut, grated (Optional)
2 sprigs Coriander leaves
1tbsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
1tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
1tsp Kadalebele / Bengal Gram
1tsp Uddinabele / Black Gram split
6 Curry Leaves
1½ Cups Curds / Yoghurt
A pinch of Asafoetida
Salt to taste
Method:
Cook Rice with 4 cups of water in cooker for 3 whistles. Rice should be cooked very soft. Remove rice to a thick-bottomed pan and add Salt, Coconut, Green Chilies and mix well. Lower the flame and keep stirring occasionally.
In another small pan, heat Oil and add Kadalebele, Uddinabele and when they turn pink add Mustard Seeds, Curry Leaves and Asafoetida. Pour this on the Rice mixture and mix again. Remove from flame and after 5 minutes, add Curds, mix and serve with pickle.
