Maida Chakkali savory is prepared using refined flour. Children love Chakkali and usually put it on their finger and pretend that it is the Sudarshana chakra. This also shows how Mahabharatha and Ramayana stories have become part of our lives. For Gokulashtami / Krishanajanmashtami this can be prepared and offered to Lord Krishna. Jai Sri Krishna!
Cuisine: Karnataka
Time required: 1 hour
Ingredients:
1 Cup Maida / Refined flour
1 tsp Chili Powder
3/4 tbsp Butter
1/4 tsp Hing / Asafoetida
1 tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Poppy Seeds
Oil for deep-frying
Salt to taste
Method:
For the Chakkali flour:
Tie the Maida in a dry cloth tightly. Keep this in a cooker vessel. Steam for 15 minutes in a cooker. Remove from the cooker and spread on a dry cloth. Let it dry. Sieve the flour.
Mix the ingredients except Oil for the Chakkali along with water to make a soft dough.
Put dough portions into the Chakkali mold.
Press the dough on square pieces of chart paper in the shape of concentric circles about 2” to 3″ in diameter.
Heat Oil in a kadai/frying pan and slowly tilt the paper so that the Chakkali gently falls into the hot Oil.
Deep-fry both the sides on medium flame until crisp and brown.
Remove on kitchen towel and store in airtight containers.
