The birthday of Guru Nanak who is the founder of Sikhism is celebrated by Punjabis all over the world. Devotees pay obeisance to their Guru in Gurudwaras.
Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469 at Nankana Sahib, Punjab province of Pakistan. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Hindu month of Karthika, November month by Gregorian calendar. This year (2012) it falls on 28th Nov.
Blessed food (langar) is distributed to the devotees in all the gurdwaras across Punjab and also along major highways.
The celebration goes on for 3 days and the Guru Granth Sahib is read continuously in all the Gurudwaras. A day before the birthday, a procession is taken out led by Panj Pyaras carrying the Sikh flag and Palki of Sri Guru Nanak. Singers, bands, martial arts are all part of the procession.
