God Saru is a watery and sweet curry / soup prepared using Jaggery. This is best served when you feel like having something light. Goes very well with Sweet Lemon Pickle or Spicy Lemon pickle.
Cuisine: North Karnataka and Maharashtra
Required Time: 10 Minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
4 Cups of Water
4 tbsp Grated Jaggery
2 to 3 pieces Tamarind
1 tsp Oil
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
1/2 tsp Cumin/Jeera Seeds
A pinch of Turmeric Powder
A pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
1 tbsp Coriander Leaves, Chopped finely
1 tsp Chili Powder (Optional)
Salt to taste
Method:
Boil water along with Jaggery, Salt, Curry leaves, Coriander stalks, and Tamarind for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and add the Coriander Leaves.
In a small kadai/frying pan, heat Oil and add Mustard Seeds and when they start to splutter add Cumin/Jeera seeds, Turmeric Powder and Hing. Add this to the curry and mix well.
Serve God Saru with Rice and Lemon Pickle.

Yes, it gives a burnt aroma to the Saaru. I am told my grandma used to add this. Maybe an acquired taste.
