Huli Thovve is a curry prepared using lentils and vegetables. It is a popular dish during festivals and celebrations like weddings in South Karnataka.
Time Required: 30 Minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
1 Cup Tur Dal/Red Gram split
250gms Sweet Pumpkin or Ridge gourd
1/2 Cup Tamarind pulp
1″ piece Jaggery
For the masala powder/paste:
5 – 8 Red Chillies
1″ piece Dalchini/Cinnamon
1tbsp Bengal Gram
1tbsp Urad Dal
2 Cloves
1/2 tsp Methi/Fenugreek Seeds
A pinch of Asafoetida/Hing
3tbsp Coriander Seeds
1/2 Cup fresh grated Coconut
For the Seasoning:
1tbsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
Few Curry Leaves
1 Red Chili, Broken
1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
Method:
Fry the ingredients for the masala separately in little Oil except for coconut. Grind all these along with coconut to a paste. Boil Dal and Vegetables. To this add the masala paste, Jaggery, Salt and Tamarind pulp and cook for 5 minutes.
Heat Oil for seasoning and add Mustard Seeds and when they splutter, add Red Chili, Curry leaves and Turmeric Powder. Add this to the dal mixture.
Serve with plain rice and fritters like Ambode.
