Gojju can be prepared using many vegetables like Capsicum, Mango, Bhindi / Okra, Lemon, and this recipe is with star Gooseberries. Everyone would have eaten these small gooseberries dipped in chili-salt powder when in school. I did, almost everyday!
Time Required: 15 Minutes
Ingredients:
20 Small Nellikayi / Star Gooseberries
2 tbsp Gojjina pudi (Gojju masala powder)
½ Cup Fresh Coconut, Grated
2 Green Chilies, Slit
2 tsp Oil
½ tsp Mustard Seeds
A pinch of Turmeric Powder
Few Curry leaves
½ Cup Jaggery
Salt to taste
Method:
Grind Coconut and Gojjina pudi to a paste. Add water if needed. Heat Oil in a kadai/pan and add Mustard Seeds and when they start to splutter, add Turmeric powder and Curry leaves. Add Nellikayi and sauté for a minute. Add Masala paste, Salt and Jaggery and mix well. If the consistency is too thick, add half-cup water. Let it cook for 5 minutes. Remove to a serving bowl and serve with plain Rice, Ambode or Chapathi.
Yum!! Reminds me of my childhood in mysore!!!
🙂
I must say this was an excellent new recipe for small gooseberries (also called harpallawdi in gulbarga and bidar) apart from the normal usage and chutney preparation out of it.
