Avalakki Chivda is a snack prepared using flattened Rice. Great to pack this for long journeys and picnics. I remember my mom packing this for our train journeys. The whole family would enjoy munching on this while looking out of the train window.
Time Required: 20 Minutes
Ingredients:
2 Cups thin Avalakki/Poha/Flattened Rice
4tbsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
1tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
2 tbsp Groundnuts
2tbsp Fried Gram
¼ Cup Dry Coconut pieces
2 Green Chilies, Chopped finely
1tbsp Dry Grapes / Raisins
6 – 8 Cashew nuts
1tbsp Sesame Seeds
Few Curry Leaves
3 – 4 Balaka/Dry Stuffed Green Chilies
1tsp Red Chili Powder, Optional
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida
½tsp Turmeric Powder
1tsp Sugar
Salt to taste
Method:
Sun dry Avalakki for 10 – 20 minutes in a big tray or dry-roast in a big kadai for 5 minutes . Add Salt and Chili Powder to the Avalakki and mix well. Heat a tbsp of Ghee and add to the avalakki and mix well.
Roast Sesame seeds and remove on the Avalakki. Heat 1tsp Oil, and on low flame fry Groundnuts and remove on the Avalakki.
Fry fried gram for 20 seconds in 1tsp Oil and remove on the Avalakki. Mix gently.
Fry Cashew nuts in 1tsp Oil and remove on the Avalakki.
Similarly fry Dry-Coconut and remove on the Avalakki.
Gently mix.
Fry Balaka and keep aside. Heat the remaining Oil and add Mustard seeds and when they splutter, add Chilies, Jeera, Turmeric Powder, Curry leaves and Hing. Let it cool.
Pour this over the Avalakki and mix well. Break the Balaka and mix. Let the mixture cool completely.
Mix Sugar and Raisins. In a big kadai / pan add the mixed Avalakki and fry for 2 minutes. Store Avalakki Chivda in dry airtight containers.
Serve with hot masala tea.
